Americans need to know certain things about the coup attempt—the US press has a responsibility to ask the penetrating and disturbing and uncomfortable questions.
Unless the DOJ decides to prosecute Trump, this whole thing seems like a theatrical waste of time. Voters rank it extremely low on the list for priorities, which is why we have GOP +3.
Thanks for commenting! One of the things that I'm curious about is how informed public opinion is on this topic; do the people who don't care about this topic know much about this topic?
My guess is it is a “don’t know and don’t care” attitude outside the Dem base. This is their 3rd attempt at taking down Trump so people seem pretty jaded about that. I would see it trending much higher in the polls if more people cared about it. Inflation is far and away number 1 on peoples minds at the moment it seems.
If the DOJ decides to prosecute it could turn some heads. At least there would be some accountability there for criminal actions even if voters still don’t care.
I find it hard to fathom why an informed person wouldn’t care about this, but of course it’s far from the only issue in the world; I should say that this goes way beyond Trump and that this extends to the broader GOP.

Anecdotal, but this seems to be what voters are thinking based on polling. https://wamu.org/story/22/06/21/how-the-jan-6-hearings-are-landing-in-one-virginia-swing-district/
FiveThirtyEight had some good data on this but it was a while ago. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/americans-are-moving-on-from-jan-6-even-if-congress-hasnt/
