Out here in Santa Fe we are watching our beloved forests turn to ash, taking with them the blue skies that rivaled Greece for the purity of the light. It's a soul-crushing experience especially when we turn to the news and see nothing of the urgency the moment requires. Is it too conspiratorial to think that the entire thrust of the right wing enterprise, from the Kochs on down, is to forestall action until it is too late to do anything? Or to divide us with idiocies so we can't dwell on that which should unite us all under one flag.

I think of all the people who work in these right wing think tanks and wonder, "What world do they think their children will live in?" Is power really so seductive that it overrides concern for their children's future? It must be.

Or perhaps the human species simply hasn't evolved to the point where we can face our own extinction with the sense of purpose and resolve the matter requires.

Alternatively, there may be millions of people who understand the problem and await their marching orders as to how we can move, as a people, to deal with this crisis. Right now we are stuck watching an enormous cloud of smoke and dust descend over our world, clouding not just the skies we cherished but the way forward.

Sorry to hear about the situation in Santa Fe; I hope that activism can break through and take off and snowball, since there needs to be a total breakthrough or else we won't be able to implement the proposals.

Yeah, solidarity against the common foe but our politics may preclude that kind of national front. Someone, somewhere needs to remind us that saving the planet should be our number one concern, across race and class. Mostly we need to remind people in power that their children will suffer too. Will they care?

It's shocking to me that billionaires haven't poured their money into driving the climate deniers out of Washington; it's very odd that someone like Bill Gates will focus on something like vaccination in Africa when Africa is going to burn if people like Bill Gates remain apolitical.

Again, what goes through their minds when the warning lights are blinking across horizon? Perhaps the focus on making money is so consuming that putting one's head up to feel the hot breeze of death coursing around them is just something they don't have time for.

Do you think that it's worth trying to mobilize billionaires and celebrities? Or do you think that that's a waste of time?

I don't know, Andrew. I feel as you do though. This is a choice we're making. Some of us may not know we're making that choice but that won't matter soon enough. More important would be a national front of disparate groups saying: we will lay down our arms in defense of the planet. The culture wars keep us from that common goal and that's by design.
