I'd argue this irrationality you mention goes both ways. Often times people will dissect people like Joe Rogan and all of his claims, then ignore the misinformation of the mainstream media. This article does a nice job of showing the how the mainstream/legacy media fails to establish trust or show this universal skepticism you mention.
My piece argues that the people who are very confident that the MSM are spreading misinformation need to look in the mirror and ask themselves whether they're adequately skeptical about their alternative non-MSM sources.
This Medium piece is a stellar example; suppose it turns out to be ITSELF misinformation? In that case, it's misinformation that is telling you that the MSM is misinforming people.
To quote my piece above:
"the people who regard the mainstream media as too biased to waste time with will put the mainstream media’s output under an electron microscope, but these people will remain 100% blind to their own sources’ problems and will swallow whole the nonsense that their own sources feed them"
I agree with your point. I'd just add that this is a two way street here, and there's plenty of reason to be skeptical of MSM as well as alternative media. People need to examine their blind spots on both ends.
